Jake Brunger


Jake Brunger (book and lyrics) and Pippa Cleary (music and lyrics) are a London-based musical theatre writing partnership. They met at Bristol University in 2008, where they were studying Drama and Music respectively.


Their stage musical adaptation of Sue Townsend's THE SECRET DIARY OF ADRIAN MOLE AGED 13 3/4 will open in the West End for a 17-week run from June 2019 at the Ambassadors Theatre. The show was first produced at Leicester Curve and subsequently ran at the Menier Chocolate Factory, where it was nominated for the 2017 Evening Standard Award for Best Musical. The Original London Cast Recording is due to be released by Sony Masterworks Broadway.


Jake and Pippa recently completed a six-month attachment to the National Theatre Studio and are currently writing an original new musical for Mark Cartwright and Tim Johanson as well as developing numerous other projects for stage, film and television.

(Edinburgh Fringe, Theatre 503 and Jermyn Street Theatre; licensed by Music Theatre International), THE GREAT BRITISH SOAP OPERA (Edinburgh Fringe and Jermyn Street Theatre), RED RIDING HOOD (Singapore Repertory Theatre, Pleasance Theatre in London and Edinburgh, Middle East tour, El Repertorio in Mexico City and Casa Mañana in Texas, USA; licensed by Rodgers and Hammerstein Theatricals), the stage musical adaptation of Sue Townsend’s THE SECRET DIARY OF ADRIAN MOLE AGED 13 3/4 (Leicester Curve, Menier Chocolate Factory), PRODIGY (National Youth Music Theatre at St James Theatre; upcoming licensing by Music Theatre International), TREASURE ISLAND (Singapore Repertory Theatre) and CHICKEN LITTLE (The Other Palace / Singapore Repertory Theatre).







Jake and Pippa’s additional credits include music and lyrics for the Rose Theatre, Kingston’s 2013 Christmas show THE SNOW GORILLA, a song for the musical revue A SONG CYCLE FOR SOHO (Soho Theatre) and the opening number for 2014’s WEST END BARES (Cafe de Paris).


THE SECRET DIARY OF ADRIAN MOLE AGED 13 3/4 was nominated for the 2015 UK Theatre Award for Best Show for Children and Young People and TREASURE ISLAND was nominated for the 2016 The Singapore Life Theatre Award for Best Show for the Young, with CHICKEN LITTLE receiving the same nomination at the 2018 Awards. Pippa was the recipient of the 2013 Arts Foundation Fellowship for Musical Theatre Composition, supported by the Lionel Bart Foundation, and they have twice been finalists for The Stiles and Drewe Prize.


The Original London Cast Recording of PRODIGY was released by Auburn Jam Music in July 2016, entering the iTunes Soundtrack chart at #3, and is available on Spotify and Apple Music. A SONG CYCLE FOR SOHO was recorded and released by SimG Records and is available to purchase from Amazon.


Jake and Pippa’s songs are regularly performed in cabarets, concerts and drama school showcases in London and the West End.  In 2018 they headlined their first sell-out concert at Live at Zedel, which can be viewed online here. They were chosen for the 2013 Johnny Mercer Foundation Songwriters Project in Chicago and in February 2016 they were made Associate Artists of Leicester Curve by Artistic Director Nikolai Foster.
